Appliqué Academy: Pineapple Medallion from Telling Stories Through the Needle's Eye

The pineapple has been a symbol of welcome for many generations, and our Pineapple Medallion will do just that as it hangs in your home. This dimensional block was inspired by a fabric we purchased last year. When we saw the design, we knew that we needed to translate it into a medallion and hopefully a future quilt. We also knew that it would be perfect block to teach at the Academy of Appliqué in Williamsburg, Virginia. This will be our second session class, March 2-4, 2023.

This block is chock full of dimensional flowers and leaves that look difficult ...

Woodland Reverie at the Academy 2022 from Telling Stories Through the Needle's Eye

As always, we came home from the Academy of Appliqué exhausted and excited, ready to start new projects and jazzed by the inspiration of the many people we met and stitched with during the week. Our first session was these two blocks from our Woodland Reverie series: Butterfly and Trillium and Cascading Creek. The class was roughly divided in half, so we got to watch both blocks coming to life.
Kara is working the quilt on a black background, and Teri is using the neutral background. It is amazing to see the difference that even that change can make in ...

What's Happening? from Telling Stories Through the Needle's Eye

Spring has officially hit the state of Maryland, and I (Teri) have been enjoying some beautiful long walks, enjoying all the flowers in bloom. There is nothing that inspires us more than nature, with all its bountiful beauty. I guess it's no surprise that we stitch so many flowers!

Even as the world is starting to slowly open up again, at least here in the US, we are staying quite busy with new designs for online stitching programs. Participating in several stitch alongs this past year has been such a fun way to "meet" new stitching friends, while we ...

What's Stitching? from Telling Stories Through the Needle's Eye

Over the course of the last two weeks, Teri shared about the first installment of our Village Wanderings project that she taught at the Academy of Appliqué. Much to my dismay, I (Kara) was unable to make the trip to the Academy this year, due to travel restrictions here in Europe. We did a little stitching session via video, but it wasn't quite the same. Although the lockdown is quite restrictive here in Germany, I have been keeping the stitching home fires burning for future projects, and today, I thought I would share some little picture hints of what ...

Academy of Appliqué 2021: Home Construction from Telling Stories Through the Needle's Eye

It has been a crazy year since last year's visit to Williamsburg, Virginia, for the Academy of Appliqué. In fact, for me (Teri), I can admit that the Academy perfectly sandwiched this odd pandemic year: it was the last and the first place that I had traveled and taught. I quickly realized how much I had missed stitching in-person with friends when class began on the first day this past week. We were even able to include Kara, who didn't make the trip from Germany this year, thanks to my iPad and FaceTime. Technology can be awesome, when ...

Something's Coming, Something Good! from Telling Stories Through the Needle's Eye

Could it be? Yes, it could
Something's coming, something good, if (you) can wait
Something's coming, (you) don't know what it is
But it is gonna be great

Are you the kind of person who translates everything into song? I (Teri) confess to that odd trait; no matter what I'm thinking about, somehow an obscure song gets stuck in my head as I'm processing. So this week, as I pondered this post, the song "Something's Coming," from West Side Story, replayed in my brain. Why, you may ask? Because Kara and I have been ...

All About the Academy! from Telling Stories Through the Needle's Eye

It seems like just yesterday that Teri and I (Kara) were showcasing our very first Academy of Appliqué class offerings. It's hard to believe that 5 years ago, we were sharing our Secret Garden and Floral Wreath blocks. For our 2021 class, we are thrilled to be able to show you the first set of blocks in our Village Wanderings Series—Homes.

These quaint houses were inspired by European homes and cottages—specifically from Alsace, France. We fell in love with the old timbered structures and beautiful colors, so we turned them into these four seasonal homes "built" out ...

Travels and Updates! from Telling Stories Through the Needle's Eye

It has been a crazy month in the Through the Needle's Eye world. Thanks to many of you, our Woolen Oak mystery block was a great success! The time leading up to our reveal and the reveal week were incredibly busy, but certainly well worth it. Now that things are slowing down a bit, we thought we would share a little travel inspiration as well as some sneak peeks of what what we have coming up for you on the blog and on our website.
From palaces to nature,
this trip was not lacking in inspiration.
Since Europe has ...

A Winner and a Sale from Telling Stories Through the Needle's Eye

We hope the title got your attention! We would like to thank all of you who shared your stitching projects with us, and for all the kind birthday wishes, as well. With such a strong community of stitching friends, it is easier to feel surrounded than to feel alone, though we may be miles apart. May we continue to create beauty during this time of isolation, being calmed by the needle and thread, and to feel the companionship of our fellow stitchers. And for your friends and family who aren't acquainted with the calming effects of hand stitching, call ...

Last week, we enjoyed a fantastic time in Williamsburg, Virginia. We spent the first half of the day on Sunday visiting the Mid-Atlantic Quilt Festival in Hampton before we headed back to Kingsmill Resort to set up our classroom for the Academy of Appliqué. More will follow from the Quilt Festival in the near future. Please enjoy some of the highlights of the classes we taught last week.

Still On the Road from Telling Stories Through the Needle's Eye

We have just finished teaching the first of three classes on the road, and what a class it was! Our first Woodland Reverie class was a smashing success, with 12 wonderful ladies taking part. Round two starts tomorrow, with 23 members of the Colonial Piecemakers Guild, and we are excited to share our Marcia's Flowers pattern with them. We are shifting gears from the woodlands to flowers and working diligently to prepare for the next stitching adventure, so we will leave you with a picture of our happy students.

Stay tuned for more pictures of happy faces!

Love,

Packing Time from Telling Stories Through the Needle's Eye

Spring is coming! And that means we are getting ready to head to the Academy of Appliqué in Williamsburg, Virginia. This will be our fourth year as members of the faculty, and we are honored to be a part of such a prestigious group of appliqué artists.

Kara arrived in the states on Tuesday, and we have been busy preparing and packing for our trip. The pictures of our mess explain why this post is so brief. But we will have a LOT to share with you from our wonderfully packed month of teaching.
Maybe we will see you at ...

New Friends, Finishes, and Getting Ready from Telling Stories Through the Needle's Eye

This post is a little bit of this and that as I (Kara) wrap up my to-do list before I head stateside in just a few days for the Academy of Appliqué. It's been a whirlwind couple of weeks, with a visit to Switzerland to see our nephew defend his thesis and a visit north to Heidelberg to share our needle book with a lovely bunch of ladies at the Hearts and Castles Quilt Guild. Their president, Gaby, invited me up to teach the needle book and to share some of my antique quilts.

Stitching a Sampler and More! from Telling Stories Through the Needle's Eye

This time of year for Teri and me (Kara) is a little crazy. We are getting prepped and ready for our Academy of Appliqué class, and this year we have two new teaching venues, all around the same time. Needless to say we are stitching, cutting, and typing our little hearts out!

Our first class will be our Academy class, and we are teaching the first two blocks from our Woodland Reverie Quilt. We are excited about these two dimensional blocks, and we hope our students are, too! There are a few seats left in the class, so if you ...

Mitering a Border and a Goal Update from Telling Stories Through the Needle's Eye

About a month ago, I (Teri) shared some of my stitching goals with you, in an effort to gain some accountability. You can read about them HERE.  I am happy to report that I have made some progress! Yesterday, I worked on the handout for our Woodland Reverie class at the upcoming Academy of Appliqué in Williamsburg. This lovely dogwood blossom will be among the flowers we will be stitching in that class. I'm always happy when I can check that to-do item off my list and can get ready to assemble kits.

Today's task was to put ...
